An air classifier is a device used to separate dry powders into fine and coarse fractions based on particle size and density, using a stream of high-velocity air. Unlike mechanical sieving, air classification offers a contactless and highly efficient method of grading materials without screens or meshes.

Air classifiers utilize centrifugal and gravitational forces within a controlled airflow to sort particles. The process involves:

  1. Material Inlet – Powdered material is introduced into the classifier housing.
  2. Air Flow Generation – A high-speed fan or blower creates a circulating airflow inside the chamber.
  3. Centrifugal Classification – As particles enter the rotating classifier wheel or chamber, fine particles are carried upward with the airflow, while heavier or coarser particles are thrown outward and downward by centrifugal force.
  4. Fine & Coarse Separation – Fine particles exit through the top as classified product. Coarse particles are returned to the mill or collected for reprocessing.
